What is a forum?

Can I add a forum to a course? Can I restrict the forums and comments?

A forum is a great way of maintaining the social aspect of learning in which you can set up activities that require staff and learners to collaborate and talk online.

The forum module is an activity where learners and trainers can exchange ideas by posting comments, which can also be graded by the trainer or other learners.

What Type of Forums are there?

In Totara you have 5 forum types these are:

  • Standard forum for general use

  • Each person posts one discussion

  • Q&A forum

  • Standard forum displayed in a blog like format

  • A single simple discussion

Standard forum for general use

This is an open forum where anyone can start a new discussion at any time and learners can reply to threads. This best for open discussions

Standard forum displayed in a blog-like format

Again this is an open forum where anyone can start a new discussion at any time and learners can reply to threads. However it is displayed in blog like format, so all on one page with discuss this topic links.

Single Simple discussion

This can be used so tutors can start a discussion which everyone can respond to, (learners can't start a new thread they can only reply and the single simple discussion can't be used with separate groups).

Each person posts one discussion

This allows each learner to post exactly one new discussion topic which everyone can then reply to.

Q & A Forum

This is where a question is posted by the trainer for example, and the learners must first post their answer/perspective before viewing other learners posts.
